Hey hey! Have you lost yourself in the demands of motherhood? Have you wondered if it’s possible to care for yourself well in the midst of a full life?  Today’s show is a special one, featuring the first two chapters of my newest book, Remaining You While Raising Them: The Secret Art of Confident Motherhood. This is not a parenting book about your children- those books are already out there! This is a motherhood book, and it’s about you. I wrote Remaining You While Raising Them to help women find freedom from the heavy weight of modern motherhood. I can’t give you a step-by-step plan to raise perfect children (an impossible dream!), but I can help you thrive as a happier, healthier mom.  Listen in on these audio chapters to hear:  One thing that bonds all moms together (besides our fierce love for our children) Personal stories from my own motherhood journey with five sons The shocking truth about the greatest gift we can give our kids Why motherhood is not just about what you do, but who you are (and what your kids will remember) Favorite quotes: “I had no idea motherhood would be my greatest joy and also the hardest thing I would ever do. I wasn’t prepared for how motherhood would change my life, and I certainly wasn’t prepared for how it would change me.” “Motherhood is harder, messier, crazier, and more amazing than anything we could have imagined.” “Modern motherhood may be broken, but we don’t have to let it break us anymore.” “Being the best mother you can be starts with learning to mother yourself.” “The greatest gift I can give my kids is to be an emotionally healthy mom and to model the way for them.” “A mother’s emotional health (her spiritual, mental, and relational health) is the most important legacy she can give her children.” “Motherhood isn’t about what you do, it’s about who you are.” Order your copy of Remaining You While Raising Them here. Tomorrow is the big day! My newest book, Remaining You While Raising Them, releases into the world, and I can’t wait for it to be in your hands!  To celebrate, my friend Phoebe Barron is here to turn the tables and interview me! Phoebe is the mental health consultant on Remaining You While Raising Them. She is a licensed counselor and counseling professor. She speaks to churches about emotional health and lives in Oklahoma with her husband, three kids, and fluffy golden doodle.  I’m thrilled for you to hear some of her perspectives firsthand (you know, I couldn’t resist sneaking in a few questions of my own!).  Join Phoebe and I as we discuss:  The single biggest driver of mom guilt (secret: it’s not your mom or your MIL) Why having a mother who models caring for herself and her needs is so important to our daughters (and our sons!) One magic question that keeps “taking care of mom” from becoming just another thing on your to-do list How trusting your gut and doing what’s best for your family are backed by research  My ultimate goal for writing THIS book Favorite quotes: “When I asked about mom guilt almost all women said they had mom guilt but the single biggest driver was social media.” “The most important thing we can do to be good moms is to make sure that we are as emotionally healthy as possible.” “Taking care of ourselves emotionally is the most selfless thing we can do for our families.” “Getting in the habit of saying what do I need right now is the ultimate self-care.” “There are a few ways of really parenting up. There are a ton of ways of getting it good enough and there are no ways of getting it perfect.” “Our job is to model health to our children, discipline our children, and give them discipline but most of all to love our children. If we do those things our kids are going to be just fine.”  Links to great things we discussed:  Remaining You While Raising Them Oppenheimer I’ve Witnessed It- Passion and Melodie Malone The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution Order your copy of Remaining You While Raising Them here. Our guest today for Smart Girl Summer gets it (and so do I!).  As a preacher’s kid who watched her family experience deep church hurt, Natalie Runion understands the desire to walk away. Hey there! As the season of swimsuits and shorts, summer can bring up all kinds of feelings about our bodies. Women can feel afraid (or even ashamed) to talk about it. Today, we’re going there, and I’ve brought in a good friend for this special Smart Girl Summer episode to help us!  Alisa Keeton is the founder of Revelation Wellness, and she is on a mission to help women love God, get healthy, be whole, and love others.  Alisa is also an author, and her new book, The Body Revelation: Physical and Spiritual Practices to Metabolize Pain, Banish Shame, and Connect to God with Your Whole Self, is a tool to help women do just that.  Listen in our conversation as Alisa and I discuss:  Why we are prone to extremes when it comes to our bodies How getting healthy and being whole impacts how we love God and others The point in a new venture when most women quit (and why they shouldn’t give up!) How trauma affects our physical bodies, and why downplaying it is so detrimental The prayer you should pray if you’re not sure if your idea is your own or from the Lord Favorite quotes: “Your body has been designed by God. There is nothing about you that genetically is flawed.  He is on purpose with a purpose. Every body is a good body.” “Love God. Get healthy, be whole. Love others.” “I don’t think you need to be polite with Jesus. You have to be real with him and never let go.” “Before you had words for life to explain and have a worldview, your body was trying to tell you things and it has always been trying to tell you stuff.” “Before you go ask your friends or all the people you think you need their approval, sit down with the Lord. Take a day, pull away, go away, turn your phone off, and get in the Word and hear from Him. Once you have heard from Him, there’s no turning back.” “You know it is the Lord if you don’t stop thinking about it. It keeps coming up.” Links to great things we discussed:  Alisa Keeton Website Alisa Keeton Instagram Alisa Keeton Facebook Alisa Keeton Twitter Revelation Wellness The Body Revelation: Physical and Spiritual Practices to Metabolize Pain, Banish Shame, and Connect to God with Your Whole Self Pack Hydrafacial Air Lost What Would I Do Without You - Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors Perky-Pet Hummingbird Feeders Order your copy of Remaining You While Raising Them here.
