Confusion, chaos and crisis don’t even begin to cover the challenges we faced over the past 18  months. Most of us are still facing challenges big and small while continuing to hold what’s happening in the world around us. We don’t know what next month or even next year will hold. That’s why I’m grateful to have the always wise and wonderful Max Lucado on the show today. Max shares with us his insights and personal takeaways from his latest book, You Were Made for This Moment, based on the book of Esther and God’s promised deliverance. He also talks about his own recent life-changing diagnosis. Max Lucado is a pastor, speaker, and best-selling author who, in his own words, “writes books for people who don’t read books.” He serves the people of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas. I absolutely loved our conversation, and I hope you leave it feeling encouraged. In this episode, we discuss: How God always has strategically placed in the right place at the right time and His people responded.  How the issue of identity in the book of Esther compares with our struggle with it today.  How God gives us the capacity to face the challenges He knows are in our future. How we can live in our faith boldly, even if we are in the midst of a difficult season. Hey friends! You are in for an absolute treat of a show today! The delightful and brilliant Kate Bowler sits down with me to talk all about how to move forward with life when it’s not really what you would have picked out for yourself.   Kate is a New York Times best-selling author, podcast host, and associate professor of the history of Christianity in North America at Duke University. And she’s one of my very favorite humans.  She shares her story of being diagnosed with Stage IV cancer at a young age, what she learned during her cancer journey, how she really feels about the phrase “living your best life now,” and what we can do when unexpected changes in life turn our carefully laid plans upside down.  Listen in to hear about:  What happens when we distract ourselves from that muted ache that comes with just being a person What we sacrifice when we say we’re going to live in the present only What the Bible says about the human experiences, especially suffering What happens when we ignore our fragility in exchange for “living our best lives now”    In this episode I answer this question: I recently parted ways with my best friend of 10 years, how do I grieve someone who is not actually dead? (45:09) Great things we discussed:  1. Particle Man  2. Friday Night Lights 3. Raising a Rare Girl  4. Vivino 5. The Ordinary Facial Mask  6. Standing Strong Hope you loved this episode! For over 18 months, we have been learning how to cope with the pandemic. Some of us focus on our families, and some of us watch disaster movies (or The Great British Baking Show!). But the uncertainty and the overwhelming level of sad and disappointing news has caused cases of depression and anxiety to accelerate at alarming levels.  The temptation to give up is real, which is why I’m so honored to have my friend Sheila Walsh on the show today for a very special conversation about mental health. Sheila is an author, Bible teacher, and television host and, fun fact: she’s originally from Scotland! In this episode, she shares with us her mental health journey with clinical depression and the practical actionable steps we can take to manage this hard season. She also shares about her book, Holding on When You Want to Let Go, and what she learned as she managed her depression during the isolation of the pandemic.  Tune in to learn more about:  How to best support loved ones when they’re experiencing a difficult season How the church is responding to conversations about mental health and challenging the stigma of shame around struggle How God hears and holds us even when we don’t have all the right words in prayer How you can incorporate Sheila’s daily practices to help with depression In this episode I answer this question:  How do I know I would be good at starting a business? We also dive into how she managed all of that while being a mom, creative and business owner.  Listen in to hear all about: What it takes to manage a chronic illness well, including mental health, minimal stress, nutrition, and sleep How our food choices impact the natural healing processes of our bodies Danielle’s best advice for those dealing with a chronic illness and those who have a loved one dealing with a chronic health issue.    In this episode I answer this question:  “If you had one piece of advice for someone building her coaching business, what would it be? “ (41:02) Great things we discussed: 1. Hey Friends! I’m so excited about today’s episode and it is a special one! On the show today, I’m joined by my good friend, and Called Creatives Co-founder Lisa Whittle. This episode was quite vulnerable for me but I just loved our conversation!  We take a deep dive into why we need to find the good during the hard seasons, how to allow God to work in us during setbacks for bigger and better comebacks, and how to navigate through some of those “good“ hard seasons like loss, grief, and jealousy.  Can you imagine living life led by managed feelings versus out-of-control emotions? Lisa and I go over how that’s possible and what the difference is.  Listen in to hear us talk about : How to shift the narrative from “what if” to “what is,” so that God can bring us back in a different way  How to know when God is speaking to us Allowing God to manage our feelings so they come back under our control.   Favorite quotes: 1. Whatever draws us to the good is good for us. 2. We need to make peace with a life that has gone rogue on us.   In this episode I answer this question: 1. I feel so uncomfortable with self-promotion. How can I build my business in a way that doesn’t feel “icky”? (42:03) Great things we discussed:  1. Lisa Whittle  2. The Hard Good 3. Warby Parker  4. Maverick City Music  5. Jungle Cruise  6. Do you feel so overwhelmed and stressed out you don’t know where to go or what to do? What if I told you that you could have a life that is aligned with your priorities and space for all the things you want to do? Well, friends, today is an episode just for you!  My friend and friend of the show, the brilliant Allie Casazza is here to talk about minimalism and tips on how to declutter to destress our lives, families, and home. We talk about hot mess mom culture, how to make minimalism work for you, and tips for managing the kids’ toys (and the dog toys, too!)  Allie Casazza wants to eradicate the "hot mess mom" stereotype by empowering other women. She has built a massive audience and a multimillion-dollar online business based on her proven, family-oriented approach to minimalism. She is also the host of The Purpose Show, a chart-topping podcast, and the creator of multiple online programs and courses that garner tens of thousands of registrations each time they run. Her platforms continue to grow every day as more women discover her life-changing approach to creating an abundant life.  Tune in to hear more about:  Allie’s journey on how she become the go-to “minimalist mom”  How to take ownership of your life by taking ownership of your space The ways being a mother impact your sense of identity The importance of setting the intent for each room in your home.  Favorite quotes: 1. If you can take ownership over your space, you can take ownership over your life. 2. You being a mom is not your identity. It is a piece of what you’re here to do, just a piece. A really beautiful important piece of it.  3. There’s always going to be some level of mess even if you declutter. So what can you do to stop taking on all the pressure on yourself to maintain the house and clean it up? Put your kids in charge of their own stuff, set boundaries, do chore charts, do consequences. Whatever it is that fits in your parenting style. Set it up in some way so you're not the only one doing everything.  4. It’s about connecting with who you are in each room and setting up your space to support you. When we do that, we have an intention for the space and that helps us make decisions about the stuff.  5. If clutter is always unmade decisions, then declutter is to make decisions.  In this episode I answer this question: I’m setting up my business, what are the most important systems I need to build right now? (44:24) Great things we discussed:  1. Allie Casazza 2. Declutter Like A Mother 3. Asana 4. Trello5. Woman6. Frasier 7. Flex Disc 8. Standing Strong Hope you loved this episode! Friends! You’re in for a treat today as we jump into a powerful discussion with my new friend, the brilliant Dr. Beth Allison Barr.    Beth is an associate professor of history and associate dean of the Graduate School at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where she specializes in medieval history, women’s history, and church history. She is the president of the Conference on Faith and History and is a member of Christians for Biblical Equality. And she has serious credentials, having written for Christianity Today, the Washington Post, and Religion News Service, and is a regular contributor to The Anxious Bench, the popular Patheos website on Christian history.   Beth joins me on the show today to talk about her latest book, The Making of Biblical Womanhood, and the importance of knowing the history of what women have been through. We also dive into the importance of understanding the context and culture of the day when reading the Bible, and the cost of the reformation for evangelical women.  Listen to learn more about:  How to become more biblically literate by approaching the Bible with contextual understanding of the day when it was written What the Reformation cost women in terms of opportunities and society norms Why it’s important to understand our history even in religious contexts Junea, the first female apostle, and how she was written out of the Bible.    Favorite quotes: Biblical womanhood is one of the most recent manifestations of the patriarchy.   I think the cost of the reformation for evengelacial women is that it made only one right way for us to be Godly. And that was to be married with children under the authority of our husbands.    Culture shapes the way we view women and men in a way that women and men are not shaped in the Bible.    There was a wage gap in the medieval world. Women made about 71 cents to the dollar, if we put it in modern terms. And here we are in the 21st century and women make about 75 cents to the dollar compared with men for doing the same jobs. I think that is a very powerful example of something  going on in which women's work is not valued in the same way as men. That women are seen as not as not quite as good as men around them.   In this episode I answer this question: I know my fear of failure is holding me back, how do I put myself out there even though I’m scared to make mistakes? (46:10) Great things we discussed:  1. Beth Allison Barr on Twitter  2. The Making Of Biblical Womanhood  3. Bon Jovi  4. Loki   5. Summersalt   6. Coach School   7. Hey friends! We’re wrapping up the 2021 Smart Girl Summer Series today with the wonderful Holley Gerth. Holly is a life coach and author, and she brings a wealth of insight and wisdom for all of the introverts out there (including me!).  Holly is a Wall Street Journal bestselling author, podcaster, and life coach, with a Master’s of Science in counseling. She has spent the last decade empowering nearly a half a million people to realize their God-given potential through books like You’re Already Amazing, Fiercehearted, and The Powerful Purpose of Introverts. In this episode, Holley and I take a deep dive into stepping into God’s calling despite your fear, how she manages comparison and imposter syndrome (yes, even today!), and how we need to honor our personal capacity and purpose.  Listen in to learn more about: Holley’s story of transitioning out of a full-time job to pursue writing and how she worked through that fear.  Looking at our own purpose and not other people’s journey and calling. We need the truth speakers to call us back to our true selves, just like God does.  Resisting the constant input from others that tells us to do all the things, all the time that leads us to feeling like we’re falling behind and distracted from what really matters.   Favorite quotes: 1. If we just keep doing the next thing and then the next thing, then God will meet there and turn it into what he wants it to be. 2. We have to be willing to start out being bad at stuff and know that’s okay, that's the only way through it. 3. So as long as something really matters to us, we are going to have an element of fear when we pursue it.  4. Pausing and asking: how has God designed me? And believing whatever the answer is, is intentional. We are created perfectly for His purpose for our lives.   5. I think we underestimate what a little bit at a time can do in the long term if we’re consistent.    Great things we discussed: 1. Holly Gerth 2. Introvert Quiz  3. Yasso Frozen Yogurt Bars 4. Evernote 5. Standing Strong  Hope you loved this episode! Be sure to subscribe in iTunes and slap some stars on a review! :) xo, Alli  www.alliworthington.com/holleygerth/

Smart Girl Summer continues with one of my most popular guests of all time, the amazing Beth McCord of Your Enneagram Coach! Beth is an Enneagram speaker, coach and teacher with 17 years of experience and a co-founder of Your Enneagram Coach, the leading platform for all things Enneagram. Beth is passionate about coming alongside individuals and helping them re-write their stories, allowing them to see that lasting change, meaningful relationships, and a life of deep purpose is possible. This passion is what drove her to create this community, a safe place for individuals to explore the Enneagram. Beth and I talk about the first days of her business, how she knew she was called by God to do this, three keys that are part of her business’ success, and the daily work she does to stay focused and committed to her business. We also dive into how we can avoid blind spots in our daily lives by understanding the true nature of ourselves.   Listen in to hear all about: How God has a plan and a story for each and every one of us, and how we can trust His plan and move forward in faith.  How to focus on our own work and lives in order to be exactly the person God created you to be. How the Holy Spirit doesn’t shame or mock us. The Holy Spirit will set our feet on a firm foundation to keep us moving in the right direction.   Favorite quotes: 1. It is important for people to recognize God has a plan and a story for their life. We need to faithfully trust the process, the steps, the unclarity. Because he's got the clarity and we need to just keep going forward.2. I think a lot of times people get going in their business and then they stop for many reasons. But what we have to realize is that it's going to be hard and you've got to, with the Lord's help, figure out what you need to do.3. Recognize you may not have all the answers. You may not have all the expertise. But just get it out there. There are people that need this.  4. Every day I'm having to battle this internal dialogue and so it's exhausting. When I wonder: can someone else do this? Then God gently reminds me ‘No, I called you specifically for specific reasons to do this work for specific people who are going to be blessed.’ 5. I encourage people to be careful when listening to other people's stories. It's great to listen, learn, and grow. But don't fall into the trap that my story is your story or my advice should be the advice you take.   Great things we discussed:  1. Beth McCord 2. What Is The Enneagram  3. Hey Hey friends! Once again, our Smart Girl Summer series continues again this week with the amazing and inspiring, Kennesha Buycks.  Kennesha is a mom, gifted artist, writer, and curator. Also, she is the creative force behind Restoration House, a dream realized while living on the island of Oahu, Hawaii back in 2010.   A proud Alabama girl, Kennesha realized at a very young age she had a knack not only for the creative but for connecting the hearts and minds of the communities in which she had the privilege of sharing life through those very talents.  She has such a unique perspective when it comes to following her why for her life and her business, and her passion to bring encouragement, honesty, and inspiration to each and every project she works on.  In today’s episode, we discuss how we can protect ourselves from imposter syndrome, shame, and comparison, encouragement for the hard seasons of life, and how we can lean into God to make sure we are following what He is calling us to do. Also, you don’t want to miss hearing my take on Medium or Fine ballpoint pens!  Listen to learn more: How to use boundaries in place for social media so that you don't get sucked in with comparison and shame.  How we need to be careful of sharing too much of our lives on social media and we need to set the standards for the generations that follow us.  When you use your gits the way that you are supposed to, it serves someone in a way that no one else can do but you.   Favorite quotes: 1. I think my heart is to always try to get us back to what God always intended. If we think about Scripture and we look at Genesis, we think about the garden that was our first home. That was where we were meant to commune with Jesus, with God, with the Holy Spirit.2. It's helpful to remember my why, remember my purpose, it helps me focus on the fact that I don't have to feel like an imposter if I'm actually doing what I'm called to do. 3. I believe that when we're vulnerable it brings freedom. 4. I think that when we're in a space where we are freely flowing, because I think when we're not publicizing our work as an artist, when we're not putting our stuff out there, whether it's words or actual paintings or whatever your artistic form is, when we're not putting it out there, we have a different energy and we have a different motivation We're literally just creating to create.   Great things we discussed: 1. Restoration House 2. Instagram 3. Tome 4. Space Jam 5. Freedom Look Good On You6. Profile Ballpoint Pens 7. Standing Strong Hope you loved this episode!
