Welcome to the show today! We are in the middle of Smart Girl Summer. Today we are with one of my favorite smart women in the world, Beth McCord, better known as Your Enneagram Coach. I love doing these smart girl summer episodes. I learned quite a bit and I'm sure you will too.  Beth McCord is an accomplished Enneagram speaker, author, coach, and teacher with over two decades of dedicated experience. In her new book, The Enneagram for Moms: See the True Colors of Yourself and Your Children as God Intends, Beth blends Enneagram wisdom with practical insights to foster authentic and healthy family dynamics. Join Beth and I as we talk about: What is working for businesses in 2024 Evaluating what is working and making changes How to maximize our time Choosing new projects What Beth is working on now Best practice for creating online courses Favorite quotes:  “There is a lot of being curious, figuring things out, and being flexible. Being flexible is one of the biggest things.”  (9:06 audio) “What can we do with the time we have and maximize it? That is the key here.”  (12:57  audio) “God created her to be her personality for her kids and their personalities. He didn’t make a mistake, so how can we celebrate that, and how can we own our weaknesses but not in a shameful, guilty, judging way? How can we see those and grow from them?”  (24:45 audio) “With courses, how can you say the same content and message as quickly, efficiently, practical, and applicable as possible? I would aim for bite-sized lessons.”  ( (26:54 audio) Coaching this week: (29:47 audio) Escaping the Mediocrity Trap: A Guide to Getting Unstuck In this week’s coaching, I share tips for recognizing mediocrity situations and practical steps to escape the mediocrity trip. The mediocrity trap is one of the trickiest ruts to escape. Unlike terrible situations that, once you are out, often turn into funny stories or proud memories, mediocre situations drag on and become what I call the "Lost Years."  The biggest obstacle to getting unstuck is often our own mindset. Don’t settle for a life that’s just okay. Recommendations: (41:00 audio) This week’s  recommendation is Spotifiy’s free audio books. If you have Spotify Premium, this year they're including free audio books in their membership. I looked and all of my books are available. Enjoy! The mindset needed during transitions so that we can become more creative and more self-aware What God expects from us as we face a challenge (and what He does for us every day) Kryptonite that we face as women Favorite quotes:  13:10 (Audio) - “Just because it’s uncertain doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad. It doesn’t mean it’s all falling apart. And even if it is all falling apart, it doesn’t mean it’s over. It means I’ve got to be curious about it rather than give up and walk away.” 14:48 (Audio) - “Transition isn’t just an aberration and an evil thing. It can be hard for sure, but transition is an opportunity to be creative. This is an opportunity to become more self-aware and aware of what God is saying to me.” 15:16 (Audio) - “Experiments are successful because of what they reveal, not just on account of whether they work or not.” 17:46 (Audio) - “Arriving at the end of the transition isn’t the point, it’s how you transition that matters.” 24:59 (Audio) - “I think we forget what it is to learn. And we forget that learning is integral to our gifting and our calling.” Coaching this week: (9:44 audio)  Confidence Boost: Simple Steps to Overcoming Fear and Taking Action  This week’s coaching I help you conquer hesitation and take action. Hesitation can hold you back. There’s a strong link between hesitation and self-esteem. Confidence is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. It is okay to feel nervous and afraid, it means you care. It would be more problematic if you felt nothing at all.” (26:13 audio) “Create before you consume.” (29:30 audio) “Look for the one rather than looking for the masses.” Coaching this week:  Biggest Success Secret   (38:16 audio)  I shared my biggest success secret! Success in life is not that much about being smart or talented. The secret is grit and support! Grit will lap genius every single time, and you need people who know more than you helping you. Whatever you want to do in life, the number one success secret is to get gritty and get the help you need. Recommendations: (46:21 audio) This week I am recommending a movie, The Fall Guy. In today’s episode, I’m joined by Kimberly Stuart, a multifaceted talent—writing coach, author of eight novels, and podcaster. Alongside New York Times-bestselling author Bob Goff, she has guided hundreds of aspiring authors through executive coaching, online courses, podcasts, and live events. Kimberly’s expertise and passion for storytelling have made her a beacon for writers seeking inspiration and practical advice. In her new book, Star for Jesus (And Other Jobs I Quit): Rediscovering the Grace that Sets Us Free, Kimberly shares moments that encourage readers to embrace God's fierce love over lesser alternatives. Join us as we delve into the early days of her career, the nuances of writing fiction versus nonfiction, and her advice for aspiring authors. We also discuss the motivation needed for tough days, the failures she has faced, and the valuable lessons learned from them. Join Kimberly and I as we talk about: The early days of her career The differences between writing fiction vs. nonfiction Advice if you are thinking of writing a book Encouragement and motivation for the hard days Failures she has faced, what she has learned from them, and how she turned them around Favorite quotes:  “Sometimes those little tiny dreams we haven’t even put any oxygen on yet, those are the ones that we need someone else to say out loud.” (7:02 Audio)  “It makes a difference in the narrative we are telling ourselves and reminding ourselves.” (16:22 Audio)  “Failure can come when you are not looking for it.” (30:46 Audio) Coaching this week: Self Talk  (43:25)   In coaching for this episode, I teach about our inner voice.  Sometimes, but I think more often than not, the voice in our head is mean and critical or just a downer. I want you to keep in mind that the relationship that you have with yourself is the most crucial one because that voice isn't going anywhere. If you wouldn't take that kind of talk from a friend, you don't want to take it from yourself. I'll also want you to flip it around. Would you ever talk to a friend that way? Would you talk to your best friend, your spouse, or your child in the way that you talk to yourself? It is how we try to survive in the world and perceive it. Every type has a very particular way of perceiving the world and what they believe to be true about it.” (Audio 16:00)  “Our emotional responses can tell us so much about what we think, the narrative that we believe, what we think other people’s motivations are, and what we are trying to protect within ourselves.” (Audio 20:59)  Coaching this week:  How to Rewire Your Mind for Bravery and Resilience   Before I do each coaching call, I have my clients fill out information that helps them identify their recent wins, which helps them recognize where they are experiencing growth and momentum in their lives. Join us as we explore why writing matters, the unexpected benefits it holds for our spiritual, emotional, and physical health, and how you can start making yourself the hero of your own story, even if you've never written a word before. Join Ally and I as we talk about: Why writing our story matters Surprising spiritual, emotional, and health benefits to writing our story Where to start if you have never written before Making yourself the hero of your story How to write compelling hooks   Favorite quotes:  (5:17 Audio) “The main reason writing our story matters is that the act of putting our story on paper teaches us who we are, what our life is about, what we are here for, why we matter, what makes our life so significant, and what is the most interesting thing about us. Beyond that, when we share that story it also allows us to connect with other people who are in our lives.”  (13:37 Audio) “It is really so powerful when you start to put your story down on the page. You just see it in another way.”  (15:33 Audio) “Every story is interesting if it’s told in the right way.”  (17:03 Audio) “When you know how to write a great hook, you know how to command human attention, and when you can command human attention, you can give people information that is really important to them.”  (20:45 Audio) “We have a lot more agency in resolving our stories than we think we do because most personal stories resolve when the internal problem resolves rather than the external problem.”    Coaching this week: How to Quit Letting Guilt Weigh You Down In coaching on this episode, I highlight the importance of using feelings of guilt as a gateway to deeper self-reflection, suggesting that these emotions can reveal significant underlying issues, like past unresolved experiences or current unmet needs. I encourage you to engage with guilt, using it as an opportunity to understand and address the root causes, which will ultimately help you find resolution and peace. This episode shares a great conversation with one of my favorite writers in the whole world, Sarah Bessey. Today, we are diving into an important topic that I don't think gets covered enough: what do you do when you feel like you're in the wilderness of your faith. If you're struggling with doubts about your faith, or supporting someone who is, you're not alone. Sarah's wisdom, empathy, and thoughtfulness are going to be a blessing to you like it has been to me. Sarah Bessey has authored or edited five books, including the New York Times bestseller A Rhythm of Prayer. She also leads Evolving Faith, a conference and online community for people who are reimagining their faith with hope. In her new book, Field Notes for the Wilderness: Practices for an Evolving Faith, Sarah becomes a shepherd for our curiosity, giving us a table for our questions, tools to cultivate what we crave, and a blessing for what was, even as we leave it behind. Join Sarah and I as we talk about: Examining our faith What it means to be in a season of reimagining our faith When you are going through a season in the wilderness Healing through hard hurtful situations Learning what you are for and how to love the world Favorite quotes:  “You can’t wander away from God’s love. You can get a few things wrong and still enjoy the goodness and friendship of God. This is not a thing that is jeopardy.” (18:15)  “In the midst of all of that, you can’t outwander God and you can’t run away from the run of God. That is still the thing that is holding everything including the wilderness inside you.” (20:56) “It is not enough to just be against things. I need to begin to name what I am for.” (21:52) “One of the other ones that was really important for me was learning how to love the world again.” (23:04) “God is hiding in plain sight in our everyday walking around lives.” (24:00) Coaching this week:   Cultivate Self-Awareness This week in coaching, I discussed how Self-awareness means paying attention to our feelings and reactions, especially in stressful situations. By noticing where we feel tension in our bodies and understanding our wants and needs, we can learn to respond to challenges with more wisdom and grace instead of numbing out and leading ourselves to burnout.
