Merry day after Christmas, friends!  How about we just start today’s episode with this thought… I think it’s safe to say none of us are disappointed that 2022 is on its way out the door.  As I planned what to talk about on the show today, I couldn’t help but think about how we’re all continuing to process everything that has happened this year (and the last two years really!) while also planning for the one to come.  With that in mind, I felt a little nudge that I needed to talk about Chapter 9 of my book, Fierce Faith: A Woman's Guide to Fighting Fear, Wrestling Worry, and Overcoming Anxiety. In 2017, I titled that chapter “What If Things Fall Apart?” and I don’t think anything could be more relevant now.  I'm so excited to share the chapter with you today. I sincerely hope that this chapter brings peace about the future and encourages you to find your own stones of remembrance to remind you of God's faithfulness along the way. Listen in to hear all about: How fear can paralyze us from making our dreams come true. What can happen when we wait for the perfect moment to take action (and how it can keep us wandering around the desert for 40 years). What God really thinks about our plans to become successful in all that we do. Links: Order your copy of Fierce Faith here You can also join the Confident Motherhood Community here. On the show today, we’ll dive into Chapter 10 of my latest book, Standing Strong. This chapter, titled Ask For It: I’m Relearning How Prayer Really Works, is especially relevant today as we all look towards 2023 and what next year may bring.  In Chapter 10, I share how God revealed to me that he genuinely wants to partner with each of us in our journey and how an intentional walk with him is the adventure of a lifetime. But it all starts with prayer, my friends.  Prayer is powerful, and we know that. However, our prayers also have the power to change God’s mind. He always listens because He cares about us and knows what matters to us.  Inviting Him through prayer helps us better understand his plan for our lives, even when we resist because we think we have it all figured out.  So as we approach the end of 2022, I challenge you to ask for what you need in full faith that God will give you what is best for you. Listen in to hear all about: How the ways we view God determine how we live our lives. To step into the life God has called you to, you must know the truth and partner with it. Instead of living in the land of “good enough,” we should ask God to show us His “immeasurably more.” Order your copy of Standing Strong here. Have you ever wondered if you’re hearing God or just listening for what you want to hear? Me too, friend! This is why I’m re-airing an episode  I had earlier this year with Pete Greig as he talks with me about how to hear God, which I believe to be one of the most important topics we’ve ever covered on the show. (Hence the re-air because it never hurts to hear important information more than once, am I right?!) Pete and I discuss why hearing God speak to us is so challenging for some. And we also talk about how to identify what’s actually the voice of God and ways to sort through delusion and deception. We are covering so much ground in this episode! Pete has committed his life to help people hear the voice of God and facilitating the supernatural outpouring of His word and truth throughout the world. In addition to being a best-selling author, Greig is one of the founding champions of the earth-rattling 24-7 Prayer Movement and Senior Pastor of Emmaus Road Church in the south of England. Listen in to hear all about: Why we are comfortable talking to God but not so much talking with God. Differentiating between when God is speaking to us and what isn’t actually God at all. How to determine the difference between God’s word and God’s whisper (and why it matters!).  Favorite quotes: ~ How do ordinary, normal people, grow in the most important thing we’ll ever do, which is walking and talking with God? ~ Ask yourself : a) Is this affirming? b) Is it Biblical? c) Is it Christlike? If the answer is yes, this is affirming, biblical, and Christlike, then it will be good even if it isn’t God. ~ We need to hear God in community. We often need to discern God's will with other people, not just our own thoughts. In this episode I answered this question: I feel uncomfortable building a platform. How can I do it in a healthy way? Hey friend! Do you find yourself still reeling from the extraordinary changes we’ve experienced over the past two years in one way or another? (My hand is raised over here for sure!) Today, I’m bringing back one of my favorite episodes from 2022 - the amazing  Shauna Niequist ! I brought this conversation back from the archives because I don’t know about you, friend, but this book and Shauna’s message still feel relevant to what’s going on around me right now. I hope you also find value in listening to this one once again with me. In this episode, Shauna and I take a deep dive into how pain can make us tender, demand less of the world, and show us the good even in the face of what has been lost. We also talk about how seasons of significant loss can act as catalysts to significant transformation in our lives. Our pain doesn’t define us; what we do with it does. You truly don’t want to miss this one, my friend! Shauna Niequist is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, Present Over Perfect, and her latest book, I Guess I Haven’t Learned That Yet. She is married to Aaron, and they live in New York City with their sons, Henry and Mac.  Listen in to hear all about: The concept of finding your next self. The importance of taking care of ourselves (and how to cultivate a desire to fight for our health!). How to live lightly and be a person who is easily delighted.   Favorite quotes: ~~If you feel overwhelmed by the mess that your life has become, don't try to go through that alone.  ~~I need to not listen to the voices that are telling me who to be, I need to get quiet enough to listen to the voice deep inside of me to see what she has to say.  ~~We don't change when we are feeding ourselves a steady diet of shame and abuse. We change when we anchor ourselves in love and self-esteem - That’s what gives us the courage to make changes. ~~I want to walk through life not dragging around these resentments, grudges and complaints. I want to live with a sense of freedom, with a lot of space inside myself,  inside my heart for possibility for the present and the future instead of feeling like I am dragging my past behind me like an anchor. ~~I want to maintain the capacity to be easily delighted. I want to be a person for whom joy comes easily and frustration is harder to come by. ~~Pain can tenderize you and can make you demand less of the world and can show you what’s good even in the face of what’s been lost. We dive right into our discussion of hurt, hope, and healing.  Be sure to listen in as we discuss trauma, abuse, childhood wounds, and toxic relationships that have broken us and how there is no shame in brokenness. It’s in our brokenness that the healing power of Jesus comes to find us. This is such a powerful episode, friend. Toni Collier is the founder of an international women’s organization, Broken Crayons Still Color, which helps women process brokenness and find hope. She is a Speaker, Host, Author of Brave Enough to be Broken, and consultant that has helped organizations with creative marketing, leadership, student ministry, and strategic planning. She doesn’t want you to just face your demons; she wants you to quash the illusion of your brokenness so you can live the most colorful life possible, on and off stage. Toni is the wife of Sam and a mom of two living in Atlanta. Listen in to learn more about: What it looks like to intentionally build community and how to develop and maintain friend circles How to identify a space, relationship, or workplace that is toxic and building healthy boundaries to protect yourself from that The value of accessing your core lie and learning to speak truth to it.  Favorite quotes: ~ Hurt and hope can co-exist. That we can be going through things and we can be doing our best to survive those things but we can also have the capacity to put up a front.  ~ Jesus had circles too and when we get intentional about how we structure friendship circles we can ultimately live healthier lives. ~ We have to become aware of what we need. Some of the reason why we get into toxic environments is because there is a toxic part of us that craves it and it becomes a magnet.  ~ We should be curious, not condemning. We are not good about being curious about helping people.  In this episode I answered this question: How do you handle chores with all your boys? Hey hey! Today’s episode is a must-listen! The cancel culture of the world today makes it tricky to navigate relationships, doesn’t it? Listen in as I chat with Seth and Heather Thompson Day about these issues on the show.  Seth and Heather provide a framework of what the Bible says about showing up for one another—even when we feel like giving up. They also share just how important it is to stop waiting for the “perfect” time to move forward in our lives. Heather Thompson Day is an Associate Professor of Communication at Andrews University. She is passionate about supporting women and runs an online community called I’m That Wife, which has over two hundred thousand followers. Heather’s writing has been featured on outlets like TODAY and the National Communication Association. She believes her calling is to stand in the gaps of our churches for young people. She is the author of seven books, including It’s Not Your Turn and Confessions of a Christian Wife. Seth Day is a graduate student of Educational Psychology. He has been a pastor and campus chaplain. His background in Human Service Counseling and ministry brings an important spiritual component to their most recent book, I’ll See You Tomorrow.  Listen in to hear all about: How communication drives relationships and what it means to be wired to be in relationships with other people. How messages and experiences we have in childhood affect our relationships into adulthood  What weak ties are and how we can value them in our lives. Favorite quotes: ~Our experiences in life, what we go through as children; we are constantly seeking affection. We  are going to adapt our coping styles to whatever way helps us get that affection and the unfortunate part is that we carry this to our adult relationships. ~It starts with you! I can only control what I choose to do. The reality is it starts with YOU making the commitment to start living life again ~Narcissists don’t want love, they want adoration. ~Weak ties matter. If we spend all our time saying we don’t have any best friend  relationships we will miss the relationships that we have. ~People who are part of a church community are healthier and happier. Welcome to the show! Today I welcome my dear friend, author, and fan-favorite, Lysa TerKeurst, for a very insightful (and much-needed) conversation about boundaries - how to make them and keep them. Be sure to listen in as Lysa honestly shares how we can stop the dysfunction of unhealthy relationships by showing us biblical ways to set boundaries without losing the best of who we are. At some point, Lysa realized she had many questions about boundaries and relationships. Lysa used these questions to dig deeper into God’s Word to discover the many Scriptures that demonstrate that boundaries are not just a good idea but God’s idea. So much wisdom is found in my time with Lysa today…. I promise you don’t want to miss out on this eye-opening conversation! Lysa TerKeurst is president of Proverbs 31 Ministries and the author of more than twenty-five books, including Good Boundaries and Goodbyes: Loving Others Without Losing the Best of Who You Are, It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way and the #1 New York Times bestsellers Forgiving What You Can’t Forget and Uninvited. As a mother of five and Gigi to three, Lysa writes from her family’s farm table and lives in North Carolina. Listen in to learn more about: Lysa’s definition of boundaries includes these three words - Access. Responsibility & Consequences. Signs of a healthy relationship vs. an unhealthy relationship + some scripts we can use to communicate necessary boundaries in our lives. How boundaries are not about leaving people but about loving people with the best of who you are. Favorite quotes: ~Boundaries are not just a good idea, they are a God idea. He established the foundations of the world with boundaries. ~When we need someone to lift up their area of responsibility, if they don’t have the desire within themself to change their level of responsibility and match the level of access you have given them, no amount of external pressure will create lasting changes in them. ~A boundary without a consequence is nothing but a bad suggestion.  ~The purpose of a boundary is not to shove people away.  The purpose of a boundary is to love others really well without losing the best of who we are. ~Anytime you feel like you have to minimize the best of who you are to help make excuses or cover up for the worst of who someone else is, that's not just a red flat that is a full on fire! Hey hey! Do you ever struggle with caring for family, friends, and co-workers without pushing your own needs to the back burner? Well, friend, you are precisely in the right place today!  My friend Dr. Alison Cook joins me on the show to talk about her most recent book, The Best of You, which helps us find our true selves while in relationship with God, other people, and ourselves.  During our conversation, Alison teaches us how to find our best and most authentic versions of ourselves in a way that allows us to show up for ourselves before we show up for others. Also, she details some of the ways childhood wounds, confusing church messages, and cultural conditioning toward women and their wants have kept women stuck, overwhelmed, and defeated.  Dr. Alison Cook is a psychologist and the author of two books, including her new book, The Best of You and Boundaries for Your Soul. For 20 years, Alison has empowered women to heal from past wounds, develop a strong sense of self, forge healthy relationships with others, and experience a loving God who is for them. Her weekly email and podcast reach more than 70,000 people. She specializes in bringing faith and psychology together to create real change in people's lives. Alison and her husband, Joe, are the parents of two adult children. They are based out of Boston and spend time in the mountains of Wyoming as often as possible. Listen in to learn more about: How Christian women internalize an unhealthy message of putting our needs and wants last (and how we can work to reverse it!) How to identify the differences between selfishness, selflessness, and selfhood. The signs that we have given up on ourselves and how to rediscover our voice.  Favorite quotes: ~We think of Jesus' words “Love others as yourself.” There is an assumption there that there is a you that is showing up; that you know who that you is that  you are  bringing into relationships but a lot of women don’t understand or don’t feel like they have permission to do that work.   ~When I hide myself, when I make myself invisible, when I play like a doormat, it’s not just bad for me , but I’m not bringing the best of who I am to the people I love.  ~When I’m really being my true self , when I’m aligned with myself, I’m empowering  other people which is what helps them heal and become who they really need to be. ~We are worth so much more than just numbing through all the various ways we can check out ; God wants so much more for us. Hey hey! Today’s episode is a must-listen, friend! I am so convinced that this is 100% true I am bringing this conversation back from the archives! You’re certainly in for a treat as we revisit this powerful discussion with historian, pastor's wife, and author, Dr. Beth Allison Barr.  Listen in as we talk about her book, The Making of Biblical Womanhood, in which she outlines the definition of biblical womanhood and how it affects women’s choices about careers, their roles in ministry, their relationship dynamics, and so much more. Beth shares how biblical womanhood isn't biblical but actually arose from a series of clearly definable moments in history. Friends, this is a game-changer conversation for sure! Beth Allison Barr is the James Vardaman Professor of History at Baylor University. She earned her PhD in Medieval History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the bestselling author of four books including The Making of Biblical Womanhood: How the Subjugation of Women Became Gospel Truth. She is also a pastor’s wife and mom of two great kids. Listen in to hear all about: How to become more biblically literate by approaching the Bible with a contextual understanding of the time it was written. What the Reformation cost women in terms of opportunities and societal norms. Ways culture shapes our view of women and men in a way that women and men are not shaped in the Bible. Favorite quotes: ~Biblical womanhood is one of the most recent manifestations of the patriarchy. ~I think the cost of the reformation for evangelical women is that it made only one right way for us to be Godly. And that was to be married with children under the authority of our husbands. ~Culture shapes the way we view women and men in a way that women and men are not shaped in the Bible. ~There was a wage gap in the medieval world. Women made about 71 cents to the dollar, if we put it in modern terms. And here we are in the 21st century and women make about 75 cents to the dollar compared with men for doing the same jobs. I think that is a very powerful example of something  going on in which women’s work is not valued in the same way as men. That women are seen as not as not quite as good as men around them.
