My guest today, Sasha Shillcutt MD, is a dear friend, coaching client, and hero on the front lines during this global pandemic. Today, it's such an honor to share her story! We spoke a few weeks before the Coronavirus hit the US and Sasha shared her incredible story of how burnout and overcommitment led her to make radical life changes and even start an organization to help others! She talks about how she found herself again, found community and friendships after a season of loneliness, and how she bravely pursues authentic leadership. We also chat about: -Common problems women face in leadership and why most find themselves unhappy the higher they climb. -Why she started her community, Brave Enough. -The power of women sharing their skills and gifts. Favorite quotes: 1. The reality is that most of the time, our life is that in between. We're between grit and grace, and it's a spectrum, and it's okay. 2. I’m a research nerd on gender issues in the workplace. If you look in the psychology literature, there's an interesting phenomenon that as women have become more successful in the workplace, we've actually become less happy in the workplace. 3. Spend time with yourself and unplug. Because what I hear and what I see is that women, when you have 30 minutes, you don't want to be with yourself. You don't want to think in your own head and do a little internal checklist on how you're doing because it's scary. I can tell you that clarity comes, I think for most of us when we spend time alone, and that means unplugging. In this episode, I’m answering this question- Did God create evil if He created everything? Links to great things we discussed: 1. Sasha Shillcutt 2. Today, I'm joined by my wonderful friend Jen Fulwiler and she's sharing the jaw-dropping story of how she started pursuing her dreams of writing and of stand up comedy. She shares so many lessons from her journey that will inspire us to fall in love with our bomb moments, find the gifts that truly set us aflame, and stop seeing our life-giving passions as "extra work." Jen is so bold and brave and I'm so excited for the belly laughs and deep truths she's bringing us today. We also chat about: -How she became wildly popular in a certain country in Europe -What is a "blue flame" passion and how do we find it? -Why her new book cover is making everyone blush Favorite quotes: 1. The defining thing about a blue flame is that it's not about you. It's about adding light and love to the world, but it fills you with energy when you use it. 2. I believe and continue to believe, to this day that using these gifts using my blue flame is a favor to my family. I feel like I did my kids and my family a favor by making space in my life for my writing work, which turned into my radio work, which turned into comedy. 3. One of the ways you get confirmation that this is the right path is that you have these little signal graces. These things that come together that are beyond coincidence. When it seems like God is clearing your path. Favorite quotes: 1. The defining thing about a blue flame is that it's not about you. How do you keep moving forward when the world seems to be caving in? How do you form habits for your future when everything seems so uncertain? How do you rise from adversity to strength? Friends, today's episode is powerful. It's the episode I recorded because it’s the episode I needed to hear. I'm joined by one of my best friends, leadership expert, and a picture of strength- Jo Saxton. We get raw, real, and share what we are both feeling during this unique time in history and how it's impacted us personally. We talk about adversity and how we can find faith and strength in the hardest times. Jo shares how suffering can uncover your calling, the role of innovation when the world's upside down, finding new ways to serve, and how to stay consistent with your calling when you want to quit. We also chat about: -How to be honest about your feelings, but not let fear overtake you. -The difference between trying and training. -Why you should give yourself permission to do things badly right now. Favorite quotes: 1. In this moment in our history, we really need to be unwrapping those gifts because they're not just about us. They're for human flourishing. They’re for the solution to the world's problems from a gracious and good God. 2. That scenario is familiar in terms of uncertainty and tragedy and pain. And what do we do in this moment? And will we be immobilized by the moment or will it be an opportunity? Can God do something with this and cause us to rise. 3. Feel your feelings because feelings aren’t the opposite of faith. Feel your feelings. Grieve the grief. You need to acknowledge them so they don’t flood your entire day. Links to great things we discussed: 1. Jo Saxton 2. Is it possible to reclaim the abundant life, the un-distracted life, a life deeply rooted in God--without making drastic life changes? We are going to tackle that today and let me tell you--our guest is a legend and an inspiration! Author, Speaker, and counselor John Eldridge pulls back the curtain and shares his struggle with burnout and digital distraction and the simple steps he implemented to regain a life worth living. He shares how one minute a day could change everything, why you don't have to move to a remote island to find peace, and how to turn the volume down on life to hear God more clearly. We also chat about: -Why grandparents need to occasionally press pause on social media too -Why beauty is important for healing -and why you need to take your shoes off more often Favorite quotes: 1. God never intended your soul to carry the heartache of the world. 2. There is a direct correlation between the amount of social media you imbibe and rising levels of anxiety and depression. 3. If you’re able to name what you were feeling it reduces the negative consequences. 4. We can all handle a crazy day. Everybody has crazy days and we can handle a crazy week but what’s become normal for us is crazy as normal. We don’t ever get out of it. We don’t have non-crazy weeks, we don’t have non-crazy months. We are sucked into it and the cumulative effect of that over the years is what really erodes our soul. 5. The world that we live in right now is really brutal on human beings. What we assume to be a normal pace of life, the amount of media that we intake, the amount of time on technology, but also the complexity of the world that most people find themselves having to navigate the trauma, the heartbreak in the world or in friends and family- all of it. That requires souls that are really well and really strong if you’re going to make it through this particular moment but this particular moment is perfectly designed from preventing your soul from being strong and from you being really rooted in the life of God. In this episode, I’m coaching you on how to not let fear overtake you and sharing three things you can do right now to help overcome anxiety. Links to great things we discussed: 1. John Eldredge 2. This quarantine is serious and heavy--but my family is surviving with daily laughter. That's why I'm so thankful that my hilarious and FUN friend Melanie Shankle is on the show today. We recorded last month pre-pandemic, and I’m so happy to have a break to laugh with Melanie today! We have a great time chatting about extreme hermit crab rescue and rehoming groups, snail mucus for our face, and how she's preparing to be an empty nester. We chat about why (more than ever) we need to continue to look on the bright side and see the best in the world and people. We also talk about: -What trends will be hot this fall (when we hopefully get to be in public again.) -Her favorite skincare regimen. -And why her dogs are her competition Favorite quotes: When you look for the good, you’ll find some good. We can try so hard to simplify our lives, but it never seems to last. Why do we make things so complicated? Today, I'm with one of my best friends and co-founder of Called Creatives, Lisa Whittle! We are celebrating the release of her new book Jesus Over Everything and how this really is so much more than just a book. It's so much bigger than cleaning out a closet or streamlining your schedule. Lisa shares how letting go of our coping mechanisms and surrendering to the seemingly upside-down way of Jesus can bring us the peace we long for--and free us up in a big way. She shares what putting Jesus Over Everything looks like practically and what she learned personally from tackling this bold message. We also chat about: -The deadly "overs" and how they are stealing our abundant life. -Why Lisa is known for giving away outerwear. -The tale of two coats--one awesome, one not so much. Favorite quotes: 1. When we obey, whatever it looks like, whatever weirdness it is, or sounds like to us, something changes inside of us. 2. Jesus over everything is the beauty of Colossians one and Ephesians one. That he is covering us, but he has us. Also if we want our lives to be less complicated, the way that it works is the way that it was set up to work in the beginning of time. 3. Scripture is for our benefit and I think that’s what we forget sometimes. We think it’s a list of to do‘s. It is for us and so there’s a reason why steadiness is the way to go over hype because it is the way our life stays much more simple and certainly more calm. In this episode I answer these questions: 1. How do you know the difference between fear and God telling you no and not yet? (48:16) 2. I’m in the first stages of building my platform, what do I need to focus on most? (54:18) 3. Do you have a mentor and how do you recommend finding one? (1:00:05) Links to great things we discussed: 1. Lisa Whittle 2. Jesus Over Everything 3. Everything but the Bagel season 4. Neutrogena Hydro Boost 5. Lindsay Letters Calendar 6. Called Creatives 7. I Still Believe 8. Worship for Fierce Faith Hope you loved this episode! Be sure to subscribe in iTunes and slap some stars on a review! :) xo, Alli www.alliworthington.com/podcast/lisawhittle3

What if saints are more than historical figures with halos? What if discovering your identity as one of Christ’s saints could change everything? I never imagined I’d be interviewing the SON of one of my good friends for the podcast but today we are joined by the amazing Addison Bevere- the grown son of John and Lisa and now COO of Messenger International. Addison bucks our definition of the word “Christian” and gives us a much better and Biblical replacement- “Saints”. We explore why saints are rule breakers and world shakers but also why being a saint is the only true path to “the good life”. Addison taught me so much during this conversation and had me taking vigorous notes. You don’t want to miss this episode! In this episode we discuss: 1. Saints are more than just halos and stained glass windows. 2. How God is like Sam I am from Green Eggs and Ham 3. The difference between conservation and salvation Favorite quotes: 1. The term Christian is something that’s become a culture term. It’s lost its sense of meaning. It’s been wrapped in stereotypes and stigmas. 2. There are a lot of people that grew up in “Christianity” who are disillusioned with the faith, who are no longer following Jesus. They’re looking for meaning, looking for purpose, looking for community outside of the context of the church. 3. The gospel is plenty robust for the needs of this world but I think in our attempt to be systemic, we’ve systematically removed the wonder and power of the gospel message. 4. If we look at the New Testament the word christianos, Christians in Greek, is only used three times but the word saints is used over sixty times. 5. So much of this journey in Christ is unlearning. It’s letting go of assumptions of ourselves, about other people, about what is possible. It’s about finding eyes to see, ears to hear, hearts to perceive and understand. 6. Saints are people who see the beauty of God’s kingdom. The beauty of his redemptive promises in their everyday lives. 7. We’ve taken this identifier saint and we relegated to a post-mortem distinction. We’ve made it about what has been. We’ve made it about halos on people’s heads and stain glass windows and things that are out of touch with our everyday lives. But the thing about a saint is that saints are profoundly present In this episode I answer these questions: 1. What is your go-to coping mechanisms when you feel overwhelmed? (37:46) 2. Do your non-Christian family members question what you’re doing with your life and if so how do you answer? (41:49) 3. How do you balance being a wife and mom while a new business? (44:33) Links to great things we discussed: 1. Addison Bevere 2. Saints: Becoming more than Christians 3. Into the Unknown 4. The Mandalorian 5. The Return of the Prodigal Son 6. Sound Machine 7. Parasite 8. God I look to You Hope you loved this episode! Be sure to subscribe in iTunes and slap some stars on a review! :) xo, Alli www.alliworthington.com/podcast/addisonbevere

What if finding true sobriety is so much more than ditching our substances? In this powerful interview, my friend and brilliant author Seth Haines shares the heart wrenching story behind how he became an alcoholic after receiving his young son's terminal diagnosis, how he ultimately won his battle against addiction, and how he found true wholeness. Seth also shares the heart behind his newest book Waking Up and how can we truly wake up physically, emotionally, and spiritually to so much more. In this episode we discuss: 1. The role of pleasure and self-control in our lives, and how they point us to sobriety. 2. The science behind addiction and how it can help us change addictive patterns. 3. Why our smallest vices are still costing us big. Favorite quotes: 1. The opposite of drunkenness is not just not drinking. The opposite of drunkness, true sobriety, is being awake to the divine love of God and the world around you. 2. I was using a substance to numb the pain. I won’t only say a substance. Social media was something I used, books, binge-watching Netflix. All of these things became addictions. 3. We have the choice and the chance to wake up. We have the choice and the chance to say, I believe we can wake up. I believe we can wake up from despair. I believe we can wake up from the pain. I believe we can wake up to something beautiful. 4. God didn’t just give us pleasure for the fun of it, it's an invitation to do something. 5. Do the work to wake up! Do the next right thing. In this episode I answer these questions: 1. What is your policy on chores in your house with all those boys? (34:18) 2. Why am I afraid to pray out loud? I live in fear of people asking me to pray. (39:1) 3. How can I improve my Instagram engagement? (41:58) Links to great things we discussed: 1. Seth Haines 2. The Book Of Waking Up 3. The Oh Hellos- Eurus 4. Typhoon- Offerings 5.
