In this episode, I am joined by one of my kindest and most brilliant friends Sharon Hodde Miller to talk about why "nice" can be dangerous.  We'll also talk about women in ministry and what it looks like to have someone call out your gifts and strengths.    In this episode we discuss: 1.The differences between kindness, harshness, and niceness 2.How to do a heart check for your motivations 3. How to respond to and love others well   Favorite quotes: 1. It’s really important that when you see a gift in somebody, it doesn’t matter if it is a gift of teaching or preaching or any gift in them because that is how they discern what God created them to do. 2. If you are merely being nice and someone is not nice to you in return then that flips really quickly. It flips into entitlement, flips into resentment, bitterness, cynicism but kindness understands this isn’t to get a response. This isn’t about me. This is about loving people radically and unconditionally the way that Jesus loved us. 3. Niceness can appear to be about others but it’s ultimately about us where kindness is ultimately about others. Christ models this better than anyone else.   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. I learn so much about the importance of self-talk in Fierce Faith. I loved the whole book and it literally changed my life. There’s one thing I still need more help with. I can’t seem to break the habit of negative self-talk. Do you have any advice? (49:14) 2. Sometimes I feel like I can hear God very clearly and sometimes I don’t feel like I can hear Him at all. I panic when I can’t hear from Him and I wonder if its because He’s upset with me, is this normal? (53:30) 3. I keep bumping up against struggles in my business. How do I know if its a sign to stop? Today, I'm with my battle buddy Bianca Olthoff. With humor and transparency like no other, Bianca is going to get us fired up about finding amazing mentors, avoiding unnecessary ruts and mistakes, and living a life that won't suck.   In this episode we discuss: 1. How to pursue a mentor and get the most out of your time with them 2. What she wishes she would have known in her teens and 20s 3. How she accidentally came up with her brilliant new book title #notsuck   Favorite quotes: The season and the time that we are in, we are putting forward everything that is awesome. We will post it on Instagram and put a good filter and we’ll tweak it and we’ll geotag from tropical locations. We will do all these things but I think that this is an opportunity for us to go first and for us to tell people this was a really hard season. This is a dark season. This is a season of failure and there are things that I learned. “Hey, you will probably fail, you probably will fall, you probably will falter, but this is how you can shorten up that curve, this is how you can still have your faith intact. Hey, this is some ways you can survive this season of suck in a way you can thrive and not just feel like you are barely making it out.” I feel like if we can be for each other, we can go further and faster and farther if we sincerely care about this Biblical principle; love your neighbor as yourself. Do you know what our greatest commodity is? Time. So when someone gives you time, don’t squander it.    In this episode I answer these questions: 1. How do I know if I’m self-sabotaging myself and if I am how do I stop it? (54:06) 2. How do I learn to trust God? (1:01:08) 3. How should the “about me” page on my website be written? What’s the best strategy for success? (1:07:39)   Links to great things we discussed:  1.Bianca Olthoff 2.How To Have Your Life Not Suck 3.Hillsong Worship: King of Kings 4. I’m with the brilliant Lauren McAfee to discuss her adoption story, the Bible, and why younger generations are reading it less than any other generation before. We'll also discuss what shapes a person's view of the Scriptures and connotations that drive others away from reading it altogether.   In this episode we discuss: 1. Why the Bible can withstand our tough questions. 2. How Social Media and access to the Internet is shaping the view of the next generation. 3. How it’s our responsibility to teach the younger generation to love the Bible.   Favorite quotes: 1. We each have an opportunity to make a difference with our lives and that doesn’t mean building up fame more, lots of money or these things we can often think will leave an impact in the world but it’s stewarding our lives in a way for eternal purpose and looking to live out our faith in whatever area God has placed us in. 2. Looking at the long view, looking down the road saying what do I want my legacy to be? What do I want to be the impact when I leave this Earth and then living our today in light of that perspective. Having that eternal mindset of our days.  3. We hope that people will take their hard questions to the Bible because if it is what it claims it is, which is the Word of God with the truth and the way. Those are bold claims so if it is that, then we should be able to take hard questions to the Bible.   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. Do you have a Bible reading plan that you recommend? (37:31) 2. How do you know if a friendship is healthy or toxic? (39:36) 3. How do I name my business? (44:05)   Links to great things we discussed: 1. Lauren McAfee, Instagram 2. In this episode, the incredibly wise and gracious Susie Davis talks about her passion to mentor other women. She also shares the lessons she has learned in life, in ministry, and what she wishes she would have known as a younger woman.    In this episode we discuss: 1. Why our weaknesses shouldn't stop us from leading and helping others 2. Why women need and can thrive with mentoring 3. How we can point the next generation to vibrant faith and leadership   Favorite quotes: 1. Show me the man or woman who at the end of their life says “I felt totally confident in my skin every moment, every day of my life because I love God.” I don’t think it works like that. Even when you look at the stories you read in Scripture, they struggled. The people in the Bible struggled greatly. So why is it unusual that we struggle too? 2. It’s a life of faith and God is asking us to do more than we normally would do if left to our own devices. 3. Most of the learning, and this kind of goes back to mentoring, should be face-to-face, across the table because that’s the only way to really know someone.   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. I love your life tips. What is a simple change I can make in my conversations that will help me seem more confident? (57:16) 2. Why does God not answer some prayers? (58:54) 3. Do I need to create a business plan for my new business? (1:01:46)   Links to great things we discussed: 1. Susie Davis 2. Kacey Musgraves 3. Friday Night Lights 4. In this episode, the inspiring Nicole Unice is going to call us to the next level of purposeful living, share why leaders should embrace humility and live transparently, and the key to living brave and courageous   In this episode we discuss: 1. What it looks like to live brave and courageous enough for today 2. Why we shouldn’t be the hero in our own stories 3. And why hustle alone will never be enough   Favorite quotes: 1. You actually can’t have anything redeemed unless its broken. Redemption is a word that means inherently that something is broken. Something needs to be fixed or healed or need to be undone or unbound. 2. We all have these amazing incredible lives that God’s given us and every single person has a great story in their life. 3. That is where courage is. We get to these places like a rock and a hard place and we have this moment of clarity where we set intention for who we want to be and we just kind of have to jump off the cliff in that direction.   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. I feel guilty when I practice self-care, help? (58:05) 2. What’s a great devotional that my husband and I can share? I don’t want anything girly! (1:01:11) 3. I'm with the wonderful Lisa Jo Baker, as we talk about the changes, challenges, and the beauty of being in the middle. Lisa tackles how we can truly develop a healthy mindset that allows us to enjoy and stay present in this fulfilling and fruitful season of life   In this episode we discuss: 1. How to live your middle-age years to the fullest 2. How we can see our bodies as lovely and strong despite changes 3. Why she wasn't afraid to share her muffin top picture with the world   Favorite quotes: 1. I don’t need to seize the day. I just need to make time to see it. I don’t have the energy to seize the day. I can barely seize the moment to do laundry. But here’s what I can do, this is why I wrote a whole book about it. I can see the day. That is a much lower pressure threshold. 2. Somehow as women, we want to erase the marks of time, the things that show what it took to get here. I just believe so strongly, I think about that verse so often that says ‘the Lord has made everything beautiful in its time,’ and that applies to us as women. 3. My kid’s feelings aren’t supposed to be the boss of me. I’m not supposed to be the boss of me. The Holy Spirit is supposed to be the boss of me.   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. I have three little kids and can’t keep up with all the details. How do you do it with 5 kids? How can I remember all the little things for them? (51:01) 2. How can I introduce God into people whos had zero exposure and not overwhelm them? (58:21) 3. I can’t work at home without getting distracted, should I pay for a fancy coworking space? (1:02:15)   Links to great things we discussed:  1. Lisa Jo Baker 2. The Middle Matters: Why That (Extra)Ordinary Life Looks Really Good On You 3. Meghan Trainor: I’m Down 4. We are marching on with my "Summer Of Favorite Women"! Today, we are with the fabulous Lisa Whittle. I invited Lisa back on the show to talk about pursuing careers we love without guilt, balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, and why your parenting doesn't have to be perfect to produce great children.   In this episode we discuss: 1. How to know when your work has become an idol 2. Finding work/life balance 3. How to mold your business mind with your ministry heart   Favorite quotes: 1. I appreciate other truth tellers in my life because I do think when you’re healthy and you’re operating by the control of the Holy Spirit (which has not always been the same for me by the way) but I think when that happens you can take it and you say I’m ready to hear what someone else has to say to me so I’m going to walk through this world boldly and speak bold things. I want someone to say that back to me because I know that I need to be told in the same manner. 2. (That encouragement) let me have this exhale of, “Well, yeah maybe I just really love what I’m doing. Gosh if God has gifted me to this area, He’s called me to this, I should live it.” 3. I think this season (teen years) of mothering is challenging for me and it’s amazing. I love it, it’s some ways my favorite. But I am dying to myself by kind of letting my own position go in many ways and releasing my kids to the world, believing we’ve done enough, and just praying. 4. I can’t really have a friendship where someone won’t be real and raw with me and that doesn’t mean I need them to tell them all their business, I just need the things we talk about, whether it be topics or whatever is going on, whatever we’re going to be talking about. I need you to be completely real with me about it.    In this episode I answer these questions: 1. What advice do you have with helping our kids deal with acne? (49:15) 2. How should we handle our own inner critic? (54:40How can I make sure my professional email communication is both professional and effective?  3. I’m with the wild and hilarious Melanie Dale who coaches us through the terrifying process of making new friends. We'll talk about how to effectively put ourselves out there no matter our personality type,  the importance of staying authentic, and how to round the "bases" of friendship.   In this episode we discuss: 1. How to bravely make female friends 2. Advice for introverts and extroverts when approaching new friendships 3. The horrifying and hilarious fail that Melanie experienced when she tried to host the perfect girlfriend gathering in her home   Favorite quotes: 1. There are two different kinds of people. There are people who are naturally gifted at initiating and there are people who that’s not really their thing. I think if you are an initiator that’s a superpower that not everyone has and you need to realize that. 2. I think we affirm people. We’re developing a sense of trust. You can share your real beliefs and your real feelings and the way that you do life and the way you’re raising kids. You can share that with me and I’m not going to be judgy about it. I’m going to listen and I’m gonna be interested more about you even if we arrive at different conclusions. 3. Don’t bother putting on airs because your kids or pets will out you s the faker you are.    In this episode I answer these questions: 1. How can I become a more bold and courageous woman? (45:44) 2. What do I do if I think God is telling me one thing but no one in my life supports it? (56:50) 3. I’m multi-passionate in my pursuits, can I launch my brand and focus on multiple things at once?  (1:01:44)   Links to great things we discussed: 1. Unexpected.org 2. I’m with the bold and brilliant Kat Armstrong and she tackles the role of women in the church and how we can break away from unbiblical expectations and tradition. She shares amazing insight from Scripture and women in history to inspire us to lead strong, stop hiding, and fulfill our purpose.    In this episode we discuss: 1. Why most Christian women downplay their strengths 2. The inspiring role of women in Scripture 3. How the Church can heal and lead out in women's issues    Favorite quotes: 1. We need both genders working together in partnership to show the watching world what it means to love God when we’re all in for Jesus. 2. We ask about women, “Is she going to be submissive?” When really the question should be “Is any Christ follower submitting to the Holy Spirit?” 3. Submission, I think, has really become the capstone ‘this is what a godly woman is like’ and I think we really have gotten away from the fact that the fruit of the spirit should be the hallmark characteristic of any Christ follower whether they are a man or woman.    In this episode I answer these questions: 1. What is something small that I can do every day to enjoy life more? (47:56) 2. How can we keep our boys ages 2 and 4 engaged in church? (51:27) 3. What simple business truth do people not understand? (54:13)   Links to great things we discussed: 1. Kat Armstrong , Polished 2. Fav 4 Curls 3. Hillsong 4. Great British Baking Show 5. Larq Water Bottles 6. Men In Black: International 7. I’m with the delightful Christi Straub. Christi is a licensed family and marriage counselor. Christi shares about the challenges she sees most families facing today. She also talks about why owning and naming emotions is so crucial, both for parents and children.   In this episode we discuss: 1. Breaking the busy cycles in family life 2. The most important thing our children need from us 3. Why emotional safety is a vital part of your family's health   Favorite quotes: 1. I think once we start to really see ourselves as just a human, or our spouses as human, and our kids as humans, we start to recognize our individual strengths and weaknesses and we’re not trying so hard to create little super beings that they’re not going to be. There’s a whole lot of rest and peace and purpose that comes from that! 2. A feeling is just a feeling, it’s not in charge of you. 3. We have to first name and recognize what we’re feeling in order to gain control of it so it doesn’t get to control us. 4. Are we creating an environment that is emotionally safe? Meaning that emotions are talked about and that starts with us. Are we modeling emotions?   In this episode I answer these questions: 1. How can I get my kids to do chores? They’re 6 and 8. (47:54) 2. What is your take on the law of attraction? (51:46) 3. How do I know if I’m ready for a business coach? (56:51)    Links to great things we discussed: 1. Christi Straub 2.
